Monuments, straw pines, war graves
Living in a free country, what a precious thing that is!
So obvious to those who have never known otherwise,
so special to those who know it was once different....
In the years 1940-1945, the Netherlands was not free. A time of lawlessness, fear and hunger. This route was created following the book 'places of remembrance', which was published as part of Sneek celebrates 75 years of freedom. The route can be followed on foot or by bicycle. Visit the memorials (monuments, stroffelstienen, war graves) of the victims in Sneek. Click on the places on the map for the story behind them. They are places of remembrance - so that we remember what happened in Sneek. In commemorating the liberation in 1945, we want to pass on freedom.
Walking or cycling route
This (walking) route in its entirety is ± 12 kilometers long and can also be followed very well by bicycle. Please note that cycling is not allowed on some parts of the center because it is a walking area. You are allowed to walk there with your bike at hand.
If you zoom in on the map you will see that a number of memorial sites are marked in the same location.
The route was launched as a booklet as part of Sneek 75 years of freedom. The booklet 'Places of remembrance in Sneek' is available at bookstore Van der Velde.
