Fountain of Fortuna Sneek (11fountains)
On a golden sphere in the middle of the water is a man holding a Horn of Fortune. The statue refers to Fortuna, the goddess of fortune and the patroness of cities, families and peoples. The overflowing horn symbolizes the material prosperity of the lucky person who comes into contact with it. But the golden orb constantly rotates on its axis, so that the water, like the influx of fortune, becomes an incalculable force. The abundance that happens to pour itself upon us can just as quickly be taken away again by fate. Just look at the history of Sneek.
Artist: Stephan Balkenhol (1957)
Stephan is considered one of the most important contemporary sculptors. His human figures carved from wood or bronze humorously poke fun at us or lightly ironically illuminate the oh-so-human history of a city or location. In Sneek, a city with long, historical ties to Germany, his fountain recalls the alternating periods of ups and downs. Just like in a human life.
