From April 25 through May 4, 2025, the Fries Scheepvaart Museum will present "Through the Dark" (reprise), a penetrating play about the Lever resistance group. The Lever family, who formed the core of the resistance group, lived in one of the buildings where the Fries Scheepvaart Museum is now located during World War II. The eight amateur actors modestly play and sing father, mother, son and daughter Lever, Mr. and Mrs. Leeman and two Jewish female hiders.

Through the Dark is about the events surrounding the Sneker resistance family Lever and their Jewish people in hiding. The play looks back on the war years of active resistance based on faith and raises the question: where do you find the truth?

About the play

Door het donker was written by Peter Sijbenga, who works as a composer and lyricist for Tryater, among other companies. It is directed by Lucienne van der Meulen. She has directed many plays in Sneek and was among other things involved in the open-air spectacle Three Brothers at the Sneekermeer in 2013.

The cast consists of passionate amateur actors from Sneek and the surrounding area. The eight actors modestly play and sing father, mother, son and daughter Lever, Mr. and Mrs. Leeman and two Jewish female hiders. In 2022, this performance at the museum was sold out eleven times.
