With D-Day looming, a big soccer match took place at Sportpark Leeuwarderweg in Sneek in 1944, with Abe Lenstra as the crowd-pleaser. Ten thousand spectators, however, were startled by a raid in which the Germans took 21 men prisoner.

On Wednesday, April 23, three lectures will be held on this "soccer raid" and its consequences. Writer-journalist Peter van der Meeren will take you through this gripping story in the sports park's monumental grandstand building. Expect rare photographs, special documents, personal belongings and unique 80-year-old film footage.

The lectures are free and last about an hour. Following, there will be guided tours of the grandstand building, where you will discover how dozens of people at the time managed to escape the raid.
