St. John Passion (semi-scenic)

Unique semi-scenic St. John Passion by the Lutheran Bach Ensemble

The Lutheran Bach Ensemble performs a semi-scenic version of the St. John Passion unique to the Netherlands. In 2023, their scenic St. Matthew Passion was awarded five stars in newspaper Trouw, and this year they will once again perform an impressive passion with direction.

A compelling performance

In this special John, soloists and choir sing all parts by heart, which makes for a more intense interaction between the singers and the audience. Gestures and movements add to the drama of the passion. The Lutheran Bach Ensemble is the only music ensemble in the Netherlands to perform the St. John in this way.

Bach's musical structure forms the basis of the staging by Elsina Jansen. The dynamics of the story, the emotionally charged scenes with the choir, the penetrating dialogues between Jesus and Pilate, and the contemplative arias follow one another in rapid succession and are reminiscent of opera. Thanks to understated design and thoughtful lighting design, the story comes powerfully to life.
