Sneek 500 years merchant city

Sneek received some city rights as early as the 13th century, but it was not until the 15th century that they were finally confirmed. In September 1925, Sneek's 400th anniversary as a free Merchant Town was celebrated grandly with numerous festivities, with even Queen Wilhelmina and Princess Juliana visiting the town. The 1925 program booklet inspired another series of festivities 100 years later.

The exhibition "Kiek, dit maakt Sneek" (Fries Scheepvaartmuseum, opening October 2024), shows that the date for the 1925 festivities was chosen rather arbitrarily by the city council. Although the historical date may not be entirely exact, "this anniversary" does give us the opportunity to highlight Sneek's commercial history with activities accessible to young and old.
