Brother Tom is conducting a classical piece (the eponymous piece "Sterben"). While Tom tries to complete his piece of music, his sister Ellen struggles with her inner demons and wears out her days in drunkenness. Their mother Lissy breathes a sigh of relief when her demented husband is finally placed in a nursing home, but her happiness is short-lived when her own health fails.
What connects Lissy, Tom and Ellen, other than their last names, is their musical talent - the ability to sing cleanly, tone and conduct an orchestra, and perhaps their selfishness, until faced with death. Although the father's impending death does bring the family members more or less together, a dynamic slowly unfolds between the three family members that mainly exposes their dislike for each other.
There is a calmness in the narrative that does not detract from the tension. The film is especially powerful because of its sardonic and merciless tone
