Exhibition: Ids & the elemints

For over 50 years, Ids Willemsma has been one of Friesland's best-known artists. His monumental steel constructions are scattered all over the province. The Fries Scheepvaart Museum portrays the artist from Oosterwierum with a selection of his work.

His little temple on the sea dike near Marrum was recently voted the "most beautiful young monument" in Friesland. With his work, the artist responds to his immediate surroundings. For the countryman Willemsma, that is primarily nature.

For all the concerns about the loss of landscape and biodiversity, it still inspires him. When he is not in his workshop, he goes out on his sailing boat or racing bike. Or preferably on skates, if there is ice again. For Ids Willemsma, life and work are not a struggle against, but with the elements.

The exhibition 'Ids & de eleminten' shows a selection of artworks that are explicitly connected to the natural elements. Together they form a multi-part self-portrait of 'ús Ids', who celebrates his 75th birthday this summer.
