Sergei Rachmaninov wrote 3 symphonies (1895, 1907 and 1936). All three have no extra-musical significance as with the symphonies of Gustav Mahler (1860-1911), partly a contemporary. But symphony No. 2 by Rachmaninov is wordy and emotionally charged. This makes it typical of Late Romanticism. The 2nd movement is world famous!
